Julia Gascoigne Palmer

My work as an Artist has always woven a path through landscape, a sense of place and people. The opportunity to travel has influenced my Art practice. A love of colour and drawing goes with me on my journey. I am stimulated by experimenting with different materials and textures. I also use photography and digital drawing on an iPad to capture a scene, which means that I'm never without the ability to capture and record.

In the 1970’s and 1980 before the birth of the digital and my sons, I lived and studied for a degree in Fine Art Painting at Goldsmiths College, London. Completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Printmaking at Brighton as well as a PGCE, postgraduate certificate in Education. This led to the start of a long and varied teaching career. Working in Schools, Colleges, community centres as well as running independant Art Classes from my studio. I love to work with small groups of students, where I can share my passion for painting. Drawing very directly from my own discoveries and love of colour, to nurture and encourage students' individual journey.

From 2015 - 2017 I was appointed Artist in Residence at UCA, University of the Creative Arts and was attached to the School of Craft and Design. I was able to explore a number of new disciplines and undertook a piece in cast glass called 'Set My Feet upon the Rock'. In addition I was able to work on a number of Collagraph prints, using found materials in the printmaking studio. The imagery was based on the visit to Gallipoli to mark the centenary of the devastating conflict, between the British, the Allied Forces and the Turks.

Since 2017 I have been living in Istanbul, where I have been working on a series of drawings and paintings capturing the myriad of diverse people and life of the city. Assisting in a project that reaches out to the many refugees that have fled neighbouring countries, and now reside in what is a vast conurbation with its rich cultural heritage, centred on the majestic Bosphorus, a gateway between Europe and Asia.

The journey continues, please look through my website to follow the many places I’ve had the privilege to visit and that have inspired my artwork. I’m currently working on a new venture, illustrating a book called 'The Pixies of Little Wittenham', set in the magical countryside of Oxfordshire.
